Yesterday we heard the news of the breakup of Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos’s twenty-five-year marriage. The financial details of their divorce settlement will remain private; however, as the world’s richest power couple, it will be significant.
It brings to mind a divorce settlement by another wealthy individual. Charlie Chaplin was a masterful silent film actor and pantomimist who made his fortune making people laugh. It makes me think his second wife, Lita Grey Chaplin, must have laughed all the way to the bank. In 1917, Chaplin’s $16-million-dollar estate was officially frozen by the court on this day (January 11) during the bitter, prolonged divorce proceedings. in 1924, Lita was just 16 when she married the 35-year-old Chaplin. Their marriage lasted three years and ended with a $1 million settlement. She was one of four wives he would collect over his lifetime.
