BORN TODAY IN 1809 – EDGAR ALLAN POE

Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite writers. He lived a troubled life, overtaken by his demons: drinking, gambling, and a brooding darkness brought on by the death of his wife.  Here are some quotes attributed to the literary genius:

  • All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.

  • I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.

  • Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of reality.

  • They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.

  • Stupidity is a talent for misconception.

  • With me poetry has not been a purpose, but a passion.

  • I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat.

  • We loved with a love that was more than love.
