Remember your birthday celebrations as a child? The excitement and anticipation? The rush to blow out the candles, eat the cake, and open presents? Close your eyes and imagine you grew up homeless. Wouldn’t you still have wanted all the things to make your birthday special? Of course! There are over 8000 homeless or impoverished children in the city where I live. Their parents cannot afford the extravagance of a birthday celebration because what little money they have must go for necessities. That is where an organization like Bright Blessings comes in. Through donations and volunteers, they fulfill the need to make every child feel special on his/her birthday.
As a volunteer at Bright Blessings, it makes me feel good knowing I’m doing a little something to put a smile on a child’s face. Most Thursdays, I wrap donated books to go into a birthday bag. I like to imagine the excitement when the birthday child opens their wrapped book. For some, it is the first book they have ever owned. I still remember my happiness  over my Peter Pan book on my fourth birthday!
Bright Blessings’ four programs, Bless-A-Birthday, Bless-A-Baby, Gift of Literacy, and Gift of Care, provide not only birthday parties and gifts, but school supplies, snacks, infant care items, hygiene products, and much more.
